Chapter 20

For two days, I am like a mute zombie. I even begin to wonder if President Malloy programmed me to not talk at all. Trip and Lecky come by, but I only stare at them playing on the floor or watch Trip analyze the two droplet statues, finding all their similarities and differences.

When I look at Trip, I picture Torrin. Is he locked up in an attic too? His talents hidden? Or is he finding ways to help the resistance inside his prison just like Trip is? I stare out the window, feeling defeated and cowardly for not even trying to see what would happen if I told them about Adakin Malloy knowing that they have the manual. It’s as if he knew we would break in. As if he planned it and made it possible. But why?

Does he know everything I took? I pull onto my lap the book I stole from his office. “The secrets of the IPC.” Does he know I have this too?

I open randomly to a page and read the first thing my eyes fall on.

Most knew the IPC (International Population Control) as the radical movement to free the independent corporations, but in reality, it was an internationally funded program that was necessary after the eradication of world hunger. IPC was founded by two individuals. Adakin Malloy, a young entrepreneur when it came to technology, and Eva Tabor, the top scientist of her time.

I pull out the picture frame from beneath the sofa cushions and look at the woman next to my grandmother. Another wave of nausea rolls through me as I look into this woman’s eyes and consider what I just read. Population control? Could it really be possible that these germ wars were merely for the sake of condensing a growing population?

Grandma Bolgi’s hair is yellow like mine and sticks out in all the wrong places. Her smile is the same. Infectious and broad. Did she know? She clearly was a member of this group, but was she a part of it from the beginning? How much did she help them kill innocent people?

I look over my room and study the window shining with the setting sun and Trip pulling a string along the floor for Lecky to chase. Nothing has really changed. The events of history are still the same; it’s just my understanding of their motivations that has changed. Does it really make it worse to kill someone because things are too crowded than to murder people because of an argument over oil?

The door opens, and I scramble to hide the book and picture frame while I watch Trip lunge for Lecky and dodge under the bed.

“It’s just me,” Janice says, and I relax a little. “Though I can’t say I approve of you both just lying around so carelessly.”

“No one ever comes here anymore,” Trip says nonchalantly. He sets Lecky back on the ground, and the mute cat runs to the table and wraps her tail around the chair leg as Janice sets down a tray of food.
